Told that the only excavation he'd ever make in the area would be his Tombstone, Ed Schieffelin filed his wildly successful mining claim as Tombstone, and the name stuck.  The town became a boomtown in 1879.   The main street - Allen - has many original 1880's buildings which include the Bird Cage Theatre, the most famous honkey-tonk in America between 1881 and 1889.  Tombstone is designated as a National Historic District for being "one of the best preserved specimens of the rugged frontier town(s) of the 1870s and 80s".   Visit Tombstone Court House - Cochise County's first courthouse, and the Museum. Tombstone is home of the legendary Boot Hill and the O.K. Corral.  The 'Historama' next door to the OK Corral has 'life like' figures moving about on a revolving stage that tell the exiting story of Tombstone.
