About three hours north of Phoenix and a short distance north of Flagstaff lies Wupatki National Monument.  This once thriving Sinagua Indian community has a number of fairly intact structures.  The prehistoric buildings on the site have been unoccupied since before 1851 when they were found, empty.  Interesting buildings on the site of particular note are the ball court and amphitheatre. The area around the site is arid but the prehistoric people once managed to raise corn, beans, squash and pumpkins.

From Flagstaff, take US 89 north for 12 miles (19km), turn right at sign for Sunset Crater Volcano - Wupatki National Monuments. The Visitor Center is 21 miles (34km) from this junction.
